In 2008, I was teaching art history at Our Lady of the Lake extension campus in Irving, Texas. I asked my students to bring in their favorite representations of the Virgin Mary. The students brought in photos of masterworks painted on wood, canvas, and 3D objects from artists in Europe, Asia, Russia and South America. Looking through the stack of photos, I was inspired by the different cultural representations of the Virgin and how portrait styles had evolved over time. I also noticed that all the photos were actually of Madonna and Child and not only a virgin.

At that time, I was doing a series of pears as a symbol of fertility. Where better to apply the pear in this scenario than as a symbol for the baby Jesus? The Hommage Series is my way of paying tribute to these great artists.
